If an ACH transaction is marked as ‘processed,’ can that status change?

Information

Title
If an ACH transaction is marked as ‘processed,’ can that status change?

Summary
There are four main transaction statuses within the Dwolla Platform: pending, processed, canceled and failed.

A ‘pending’ status indicates that a transaction has been initiated.

A ‘processed’ status indicates that a transfer has completed.

A ‘canceled’ status indicates that a given transfer was canceled and was stopped from exporting within the Dwolla Network.

A ‘failed’ status indicates that the RDFI (Receiving Depository Financial Institution, or the end user’s financial institution) has issued a return code on a transaction to Dwolla, and the transaction would then be marked as failed.

A return code issued on an ACH transfer can cause the status of a transaction to change from ‘processed’ to ‘failed’ if the return occurs post-settlement. This change of a transaction status from processed to failed is most commonly seen with unauthorized return codes, such as R05, R07, R10 and R11. These unauthorized return codes can be issued up to 60 days after a transaction has been initiated. If a return code is received from the RDFI after a transfer has been marked as ‘processed,’ the transfer will be updated in the Dwolla Dashboard to a ‘failed’ status. A 'processed' transaction can not be cancelled.
