Title
Does Dwolla support “magic links” or ways for a user to authenticate their account without a password?

Summary
Dwolla does not allow the use of “magic links” or passwordless authentication for accounts that can initiate payments.

“Magic links” sound good in theory but the avenues through which they are sent are very difficult to secure. Additionally, with passwordless authentication, there’s nothing to indicate to the true owner of the account that someone else has logged into their account without their permission. If someone had reset their password, for example, they’d be alerted when they attempted to log in and their old password didn’t work—or maybe even by a notice that the password had been reset. Catching errors or attempts at fraudulent logins early is one of the only defenses against the damages that can come with account takeovers, especially in payments.

While everyone hopes there will come a day passwords are no longer necessary, they’re an essential component of a robust security program in payments.
